About Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a great way to restore smooth, glowing skin if your skin looks dull or flaky or has an uneven complexion. Dr. Babaian offers several gentle but effective peels that help restore a healthy complexion while diminishing fine wrinkles and age spots. What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels revitalize your skin, treating aesthetic conditions and eliminating signs of aging. The way a peel works depends on the chemical used and its strength. Your peel may remove dead skin on the surface, multiple skin layers, or penetrate below the surface without eliminating skin.

What type of chemical peel can I have?

Dr. Babaian offers three primary peels: glycolic acid, retinol, and PRX-T33® (PRX). These peels improve your skin and treat a range of complexion concerns without stripping multiple layers or needing downtime.

Glycolic acid is a gentle peel that exfoliates the upper layer of skin. Retinol, which comes from vitamin A, goes below the skin’s surface, boosting collagen and elastin production. Your provider may use retinol alone or with another chemical peel.

The PRX peel contains trichloroacetic acid (TCA), hydrogen peroxide, and kojic acid. This combination of ingredients lets the peel penetrate deeper and stimulate skin regeneration without affecting the outer layer.

How can my skin improve with peels?

Peels can help improve skin challenges such as:

  • Uneven tone
  • Dull complexion
  • Crepey texture
  • Dry, rough skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and mild acne scarring
  • Age spots, sun spots, and freckles

Though peels can deliver remarkable results, they don’t improve deep wrinkles.

What happens during a chemical peel?

Before performing a peel, your provider evaluates your skin and learns about the problems you hope to improve with the treatment.

They determine if a peel will achieve your desired changes and which peel to use. Sometimes, your provider may recommend a different aesthetic treatment if it’s better suited for your skin needs.

The first step is thoroughly cleaning your face and removing all dirt, makeup, and excess oils. Then, your provider applies the chemical peel. Depending on the peel, they may use one layer or several layers.

After leaving the chemical on your face for a specific time, they wash it off and apply a moisturizer.

Do chemical peels cause side effects?

Gentle peels don’t cause side effects. However, a strong chemical peel that removes two or more layers of skin will cause side effects and require extended downtime to recover.
