What is hair restoration?

At Naira S. Babaian, MD, PA, hair restoration is a safe treatment using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to slow or stop hair loss, thicken hair, and trigger new hair growth.

The platelets in PRP release proteins (growth factors) that may activate healing. After using PRP on your scalp, the platelets could restore your hair by regenerating hair follicles and repairing damaged tissues.

Who is a good candidate for hair restoration?

Nearly everyone can get PRP hair restoration because it’s a natural regenerative therapy. The only people who can’t consider PRP are those with certain blood conditions or a severe infection.

Your Naira S. Babaian, MD, PA, provider can consider PRP as the primary therapy for hair loss or use it together with treatments for underlying health conditions, such as hair loss due to hormonal imbalances.

Hair loss has many possible causes, including:

  • Physical and emotional stress
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Low estrogen levels
  • Low testosterone levels
  • Autoimmune disease (alopecia areata)
  • Tight braids and ponytails (traction alopecia)
  • Inherited hair loss (androgenetic alopecia)

Inherited hair loss, the most common cause in men and women, makes your hair follicles overly sensitive to a certain hormone. As the hormone gradually affects the hair follicles, they stop growing hair.

Inherited hair loss is also called male- and female-pattern hair loss. Men develop a classic receding hairline with hair loss on the top of their heads. Women usually have overall thinning rather than noticeable balding.

What happens during hair restoration with PRP?

Your Naira S. Babaian, MD, PA, provider makes PRP in the office from a blood sample. They process the blood, separating the platelets (cells in your bloodstream) and plasma (the liquid part of your blood). As soon as your PRP is ready, they apply it to your scalp using one or two possible  techniques:

Microneedling

After making tiny punctures in your scalp with a microneedling device, your provider applies PRP over the small wounds. The wounds let PRP get under your skin and into the hair follicles, where the growth factors can heal and regrow your hair.

Injections

Your provider can inject PRP under your skin, which works best for specific bald spots.

The sooner you seek hair restoration, the better your chances are of preventing the problem from progressing. Call the office today or request an appointment through online scheduling.
